Catherine Loveday, Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Westminster, offers her five tips for looking after your mental health in the music industry:44

•Number one is to make sure that you maintain a good solid base of friends and family away from the music business who are still going to be there whether the band breaks up or whatever happens.

•My second piece of advice is for people to take regular breaks in their schedule. So if they have got a lot of live work, make sure they have good chunks of time where they can live a normal routine and do their usual health-promoting behaviours to try and compensate for what happens when you’re on tour.

•A third and related tip is about where you sleep. I think sleep is really important and being away from home is not good for sleep. It’s about weighing up: ‘Am I better going home and getting in my own bed?’ [A tour bus is] not great, certainly on a long-term basis, because disrupted sleep is not good for us.

•Another piece of advice is for people to have alternative methods of relaxation. One of the problems of being a professional musician is that the thing that’s your relaxation and your hobby and your love, is also your job. I think it’s really important for people to find something else they can do so that you can have a break from music sometimes.

•My final tip is to use music in a positive way. Go back to the music that you love, the music that inspired you to become a musician, the music that fills you with positive warm memories, and use those to remind you why you love music and why you’re performing.
